Walking Your Dog on a Leash

Updated: Mar 30, 2018

At one time or another we have all seen this, or maybe you've done it a pup being hauled along by a frustrated proprietor, in an effort to train the dog to walk on a leash. There are basic principles that have to be learned in order to properly train a puppy to walk on a leash. In all fairness, there are definitely those dogs who believe natural being led; you snap a leash onto their collar to your first time, and they happily plod along after you.

However, not every pup is like that. That is the reason why it's important to begin the process of teaching your dog to walk on a leash at a very young age. Building familiarization and positive associations with the collar and leash can be accomplished simply through vulnerability. A puppy must wear a collar at least some of the time, as soon as it is old enough to achieve that. Maintain a leash nearby, and allow your puppy explore it. You should praise your puppy a lot whilst handling the leash, and clip and unclip the leash out of the puppy's collar. Reinforce these associations with plenty of eager praise, and take the leash with you anytime that you and your pup leave the house.

When your pup is old enough, probably approximately ten weeks, you can try attaching the leash for an actual walk. It is vital to remember to stay patient during this training. Some owners have ruined their dogs capacity to be comfy and obedient while on a leash by simply rushing it, and by forcing the animals to perform against their will.

The notion is to use your pup's natural tendency to come to you; who it ought to see as the leader of this pack, or even the alpha wolf. Stand in 1 spot and let the puppy go around you, enabling it to pull on the leash and see that it will be allowed loose. While your pet is doing so, call to it, making certain that you state its name. When the puppy stops fighting with the leash and comes to you, praise it using a lot of excitement, and reward with treats where important. After you have done this a number of instances, wait until there's some loose strain from the leash, and proceed away a few steps. Encourage your pet to follow, and reward him when he can; increasing the space that you walk every time involving praise or treats. Repeat this with patience every day for several weeks, and you should soon have a very obedient puppy in the end of the leash.

Always give your dog positive reinforcement to come to you. If your puppy doesn't mind the leash, but pulls excessively as you walk, you can easily fix it by utilizing a head-control harness. This item fits around your dog's mouth and head, and attaches to the collar in front. The puppy is clipped onto an area between the underside of the brow, along with the collar. When stress is applied with this harness, it causes the dog to be pressured into turning its thoughts, which disrupts its own attention and therefore its pulling. With time, this system can be stopped, but your puppy will continue to walk straight because of the behavioral conditioning that has been created.
